Sapphire vs mineral crystal: which watch glass should you buy?

Sapphire crystal (synthetic corundum, 9 on the Mohs scale) will not scratch in normal use; only diamond and some ceramics mark it. Mineral glass and Seiko's hardened Hardlex (about 5 to 6 Mohs) pick up fine scratches from keys and door frames over years but resist shattering better. Acrylic (plastic) scratches easily yet polishes out with toothpaste and never shatters. Sapphire is the one spec most worth paying for on a watch you will wear daily; among the lower-priced watches here with it are Orient Kamasu RA-AA0001B, Orient Mako 40 RA-AC0Q03S and Seiko Essentials SUR311.

What each one is

  • Sapphire: synthetic single-crystal aluminum oxide, grown and cut. Hardness about 2,000 Vickers. Scratch-proof against anything you meet daily; can chip or crack from a hard edge impact. Reflective unless anti-reflective coated, which most watches under $1,000 apply only on the inside surface.
  • Hardlex: Seiko's proprietary tempered mineral glass. Harder than plain mineral, softer than sapphire. Used on the 5 Sports, Turtle, Samurai and Cocktail Time; Seiko reserves sapphire for Prospex Solar and upper Presage.
  • Mineral: tempered silicate glass, the default on Orient Bambino and Mako II, Citizen Eco-Drive, Casio and most watches under $200. Scratches eventually; replacement is cheap.
  • Acrylic / resin: plastic. Timex Marlin, Q Timex, Casio F-91W, A168 and AE-1200. Softest, lightest, warmest-looking when domed; scratches polish out in minutes.

Why sapphire is worth 15 points

In our point table sapphire scores 15, Hardlex and mineral 8, acrylic 5. The gap reflects what manufacturers charge: Orient's Kamasu (sapphire) and Mako II (mineral) are otherwise near-identical watches a step apart in price (today $252.60 vs $230.00; see the Kamasu vs Mako comparison), and Seiko's step from Hardlex 5 Sports to sapphire Prospex Solar is several hundred dollars, though the movement changes too.

Does Hardlex scratch?

Yes, slowly. A Seiko 5 worn daily for three years will show a few hairlines under raked light; most owners never notice. Hardlex's advantage over sapphire is impact: a dropped Turtle usually keeps its crystal where a sapphire might chip at the edge. For a tool watch that is a defensible trade.

Replacing a crystal

A watchmaker fits a mineral crystal for $30 to $60, a sapphire for $60 to $150 including the part. Aftermarket sapphire for the Seiko SKX / 5 Sports case is widely available and a common first modification, which is one reason we score the stock crystal and not what it could become.

FAQ

Does mineral crystal scratch easily?
Not easily, but inevitably: keys, sand and door frames leave fine marks over months to years. Most are invisible except under a lamp. A deep scratch means a $30 to $60 replacement.
Is sapphire worth the extra money?
For a watch worn daily, yes: it is the one upgrade you notice every day and it adds the least to the price among the hardware that matters. Our tables give it 7 more points than mineral. For a tool watch that will take knocks, Hardlex or mineral is a reasonable trade.
How can I tell if a crystal is sapphire?
A drop of water beads up tightly on sapphire and spreads flatter on mineral glass; it is a hint, not a test. The reliable answer is the manufacturer's spec sheet, which is what our watch pages quote.
Is a domed crystal better?
Domed crystals (Bambino, Cocktail Time, Marlin) distort the dial edge attractively and add height. They are a style choice; a domed mineral crystal scratches like a flat one and a domed sapphire costs more to replace.
