Guide · watch size

What size watch fits your wrist (lug-to-lug guide)

Measure your wrist circumference with a tape where the watch will sit, then divide by 3.6: the result is the longest lug-to-lug length that will sit flat. A 7 inch (17.8 cm) wrist carries about 49 mm lug-to-lug, which covers most 40 to 42 mm watches; a 6.5 inch (16.5 cm) wrist carries about 46 mm, a Seiko 5 Sports SRPD or an Orient Kamasu but not a 48 mm Seiko Turtle without overhang. Diameter matters less than people think: lug-to-lug and thickness decide how a watch wears.

Wrist size to watch size chart

The table gives the longest lug-to-lug that sits flat on each wrist size, the case diameters that usually go with it, and the strap width you will most often meet at that size. Lug-to-lug is on every watch page here when the manufacturer publishes it.

Why lug-to-lug beats diameter

Diameter is the width of the case without the crown. Lug-to-lug is the full length from the tip of the top lug to the tip of the bottom lug, the span that has to fit across the flat top of your wrist before the strap bends down. A 45 mm Seiko Turtle has a 48 mm lug-to-lug because its cushion case has stubby lugs; a 42 mm Hamilton Khaki Field Mechanical has a 50 mm lug-to-lug because its lugs are long. The Turtle wears smaller.

The rule we use

Every table on this site shows "Fits wrist from" as 3.6 × lug-to-lug. It is a rule of thumb that matches what many people find comfortable, and it is conservative: a watch slightly over the limit still wears; it just sits on the edge of the wrist bone. Where the manufacturer does not publish lug-to-lug we leave the cell blank rather than estimate.

Wrist-fit calculator: draw a watch on your wrist

Enter your wrist and a watch's diameter and lug-to-lug (both are on every watch page here). The drawing is to scale; the verdict uses the 3.6× rule.

Thickness and the strap

Under 11 mm slides under a shirt cuff (Tissot PRX, Le Locle, Casio MTP-1302, Hamilton Khaki Field Mechanical). 12 to 13.5 mm is a normal sports watch. Over 14 mm, the Invicta Pro Diver and most G-Shocks, sits visibly proud of the wrist. A bracelet also adds apparent size compared with a strap of the same width because it does not taper as sharply.

Case shapes that cheat the numbers

  • Cushion cases (Seiko Turtle) have short lugs: large diameter, short lug-to-lug, wear smaller than the diameter suggests.
  • Integrated bracelets (Tissot PRX, Citizen Tsuyosa) have no visible lugs; the bracelet's first link acts as the lug and curves down immediately, so they fit smaller wrists than their diameter suggests.
  • Long-lug field watches (Hamilton Khaki Field 42, Timex Expedition 43) wear larger than the diameter.
  • Resin G-Shocks publish lug-to-lug as the case length; the strap is integrated and curves down, so the 3.6× rule is slightly pessimistic for them.

FAQ

What size watch should a 7 inch wrist wear?
A lug-to-lug of up to about 49 mm, which in practice means 38 to 42 mm cases with normal lugs, or up to 44 mm for cushion cases and integrated bracelets. Thickness under 13 mm keeps it comfortable under a cuff.
How do I measure my wrist without a tape?
Wrap a strip of paper around the wrist where the watch will sit, mark where it overlaps, and measure the strip with a ruler. Measure in the afternoon; wrists are smaller in the morning.
Is 40 mm the right size for everyone?
No. 40 mm is a safe diameter for 16 to 18 cm wrists, but a 40 mm watch with 48 mm lug-to-lug and a 40 mm watch with 44.5 mm lug-to-lug (Tissot PRX) wear completely differently. Check lug-to-lug first.
Can a watch be too small for a wrist?
Only in looks. A 36 mm watch on an 8 inch wrist sits flat and works mechanically; whether it looks right is taste. The 3.6× rule only tells you when a watch is too large to sit flat.
