How to measure lug width

Take the strap off (or look from above) and measure the inside distance between the lugs with a ruler or calipers. Round to the nearest millimeter. If you get 21.5, the watch almost certainly uses 22 mm and the lugs have slight tolerance, or it is a 21 mm watch on a tight strap. Check the manufacturer's spec before ordering; our watch pages carry the published figure.

Taper, thickness and pins

A strap is sold by its lug-end width; "20/18" means 20 mm at the lugs tapering to 18 mm at the buckle. Taper makes a strap feel lighter. Thickness matters for fit under cuffs and for how the strap passes through the spring bars; divers with fat spring bars (Seiko) need a strap with a generous hole. Quick-release pins let you swap without a tool and are worth paying for if you will change straps more than twice.

Spring bars

Most watches use 1.5 mm spring bars. Seiko divers use 2.5 mm "fat" bars that will not fit many aftermarket straps; buy straps that state Seiko compatibility or swap the bars. A spring bar tool costs under $10 and prevents scratched lugs; a pocket knife does not.

FAQ

What lug width is a Seiko 5 Sports?

The 42.5 mm SRPD series is 22 mm; the 38 mm SRPE series is 20 mm. Both are in the Seiko section of the chart above.

Is lug width always half the case diameter?

Roughly, and it is a good sanity check: 40 mm cases are almost always 20 mm, 42 to 44 mm cases 22 mm. Dress watches and Orient often break the rule (38 mm at 21 mm, 40.5 mm at 21 mm), which is why we list the published figure for every model.

Can I put a 22 mm strap on a 20 mm watch?

Only by force, and it will bunch at the lugs. Go the other way instead: a strap one millimeter narrower sits with a hairline gap most people never notice; two millimeters narrower looks wrong.

Do NATO straps need a specific width?

Yes, the same as any strap. A NATO also adds about 2 mm of height because it passes under the case; on a thick watch like the Invicta Pro Diver that is noticeable.
