Guide

ISO 6425 or 200 m: what the rating means

A 200 m rating is a static pressure test by the manufacturer. ISO 6425 certification adds tests for each individual watch (not a sample): water resistance at 125% of rated depth, condensation, shock, magnetism, strap strength and legibility in the dark. Our table gives an ISO 6425 diver 20 points for water resistance against 17 for an uncertified 200 m watch.

Guide

Automatic, solar or quartz diver at this price?

Under $300 the automatics (Orient Kamasu, Mako, Invicta Pro Diver) give you a mechanical movement with 200 m; the solar Citizen Promaster and Seiko divers give you ISO 6425 and a battery that recharges from light; the quartz Casio Duro gives you 200 m for the least money. Spec points per dollar settles the order; the type decides the ownership experience.

How we pick these watches
Every watch earns spec points from a published table (movement, crystal, water resistance, crown, bracelet, lume, calendar, power reserve, origin, warranty) using the manufacturer's own figures. We divide the points by the new-condition price Amazon shows today and rank within each watch type. We do not run a testing lab, have handled only a few of these watches, and use no customer reviews or ratings.
